Pope Leo X conferred the title "Defender of the Faith" on Henry VIII for attacking Martin Luther's views on the sacraments. The title was taken away from Henry when he was excommunicated. In 1544, the Parliament of England conferred the title, "Defender of the Faith", on the monarch and his successors.

Today marks the first major conflict of the English Civil Wars - the Battle of Edgehill, 23rd October 1642
This battle features in Elizabeth Goudge's White Witch and also Claire Letemendia's Best of Men. Goudge describes an interesting landmark in her novel, since lost -- the Red Horse of Tysoe. Perhaps appropriately, Tysoe was named after the Anglo-Saxon god of war, Tyr or Tiw.
The site of the battle has the reputation of being one of the most haunted of British battlefields:
