2 August, 338 BC A Macedonian army led by Philip II and his son Alexander the Great defeated the combined forces of Athens and Thebes in theBattle of Chaeronea, securing Macedonian hegemony in Greece and the Aegean.

The Lion of Chaeronea is a menorial erected by Philip II to honour the men of the Sacred Band of Thebes who died during the battle. Lost for many centuries, its remains were discovered and recognized by some English tourists in the 19th century (presumably ones with a classical education), and it was restored.

Today is the 65th anniversary of the day the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshoma. It's notable as being the first time ever that a US representative has attended commemorations in Hiroshima.
