Ella, as she was called by her family, was the daughter of Princess Alice of the United Kingdom and Grand Duke Louis of Hesse and by Rhine and the sister of Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, wife of Tsar Nicholas II. She married Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, son of Tsar Alexander II. After Sergeis assassination in 1905, Ella became a nun. Ella was brutally murdered by the Bolsheviks with five other Romanovs: Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich; three sons of Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich, Prince Ioann Konstantinovich, Prince Konstantin Konstantinovich, Prince Igor Konstantinovich and a son of Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich, Prince Vladimir Pavlovich Paley; and another nun, Varvara. Ella and Varvara have been glorified (canonized) as saints of the Russian Orthodox Church.

King Abdullah I was killed at Al Asa Mosque in Jerusalem by a Palestinian nationalist angered by Jordan's annexation of the West Bank. His assassination was witnessed by his 15 year old grandson, the future King Hussein. The bullet meant for the young Hussein deflected off a medal he was wearing, thereby saving his life.
