25 September 1066, the Battle of Stamford Bridge near York in northern England. Viking forces led by Norse King Harald Hardrada were relaxing at a meadow near the bridge while they awaited emissaries from the nearby city of York. It was a hot day, so they’d removed their armour, not expecting any trouble after comprehensively wiping out the Saxon forces of the northern earls five days earlier at Fulford. To their horror they found themselves confronting the full force of the English army, led by King Harold Godwinsson of England in an epic fast march up from southern England - 185 miles in four days.

The Vikings were totally unprepared. They were routed, and hundreds killed, including Harald Hardrada himself. It marked the end of the era of Viking invasions, but instead of being able to relax and enjoy their victory, news that the Norman army of Duke William of Normandy had landed in England meant that King Harold of England and his men had to turn around and repeat their epic march in the opposite direction. The third and final significant battle of 1066 at Hastings was now only a fortnight away.

"Then Harold our king came upon the Norwegians by surprise and met them beyond York at Stamford Bridge with a large force of the English people; and that day there was a very fierce fight on both sides."
from the 'Anglo-Saxon Chronicle'
