Maria Theresa and Louis XIV were double first cousins.
This image is Rubens' depiction of the "exchange of princesses" which had taken place in 1615: Princess Elisabeth of France went to Spain to marry Philip IV, eventually producing Maria Theresa; and Philip's sister Anne of Austria went to France to marry Elisabeth's brother Louis XIII, producing Louis XIV a few days before Maria Theresa's birth.
Their close relationship, nearness in age and the comparable major-power status of France and Spain meant that Maria Theresa and Louis XIV were the ideal dynastic match. Unfortunately their marriage didn't do much to expand the gene pool (double first cousins are as closely related genetically as half-siblings) and only one of their six children survived.
It was as a result of Maria Theresa's marriage to Louis XIV that their grandson Philip claimed the Spanish throne when the Habsburg line failed (due largely to inbreeding).
