Today in non-royal history...

3 August 1492: Christopher Columbus departed from Palos de la Frontera with the Santa María, the Pinta and the Santa Clara (a.k.a. Niña) headed first to the Canary Islands. After restocking provisions and making repairs, the small fleet then set sail for what would turn out to be a 6 week voyage to discover a land he thought to be India.

Well, we could sort of relate it to royalty via Ferdinand and Isabella! :)

Forgot this - On Aug. 4, 1944, Anne Frank, 15, was arrested along with her sister, parents and four other people by German security after they had spent two years hiding from the Nazis in a building in Amsterdam. (Anne, who'd kept a now-famous diary during her time in hiding, died in March 1945 at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.)

Ash, thanks for posting this. On my recent European trip, I visited the warehouse where Anne and her family hid. It was a very moving experience to stand in her room there. Because of a curriculum change, I will be teaching her diary this year. It will be a powerful thing to tell my students I was in the place she hid.

You might also have them read Book Theif, about a young German girl dealing with the war in her village.
