When Adam delved and Eve span
Who was then the gentleman?

John Ball’s words have come to symbolize the cry for equality raised by the English Peasants Revolt of 1381.

On June 13, 1381, the Revolt reached its climax as massed protesters entered London and created havoc, breaking into the Tower of London and murdering the Archbishop of Canterbury who was sheltering there, and sacking and burning down the Savoy Palace, magnificent townhouse of the unpopular John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster.

Richard II meets with the rebels.
Jean Froissart

Richard II famously met with the rebels, promising to listen to their complaints and grant them amnesty. However in the age-old pragmatic manner of princes he soon went back on his word. Once rebel leader Wat Tyler was cut down, the Revolt collapsed. Most of the rebels were permitted to peacefully return home, but by the king's order many were later hunted down and executed some time after they had dispersed and London was no longer under threat.

These events feature in Jane Lane's Summer Storm, Philip Lindsey's Golden Cage and Martyn Whittock's Dice in Flight.
