Sixty years ago, on May 29, 1953, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay become the first mountaineers to reach the top of Mount Everest, highest peak in the Himalayas. (I was four at the time!)

A century has passed since 4 June, 1913, when Emily Wilding Davison, militant activist, created history at the Epsom Derby by dashing on to the race course and falling under the horse owned by King George V. She later died of her injuries, becoming a heroine of the suffragette cause.

While Davison was hailed as a feminist martyr at the time, it now seems that while she was clearly making a dramatic gesture, it's less likely that she intended to kill herself in the process. Interesting article at the Daily Mail with photos and disturbing video of the actual event here:
