[quote=""annis""]26 February, 1266, saw the death of one of my favourite medieval historical figures, King Manfred of Sicily, bastard son of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. Handsome, brave and cultured, Manfred unfortunately had an implacable and powerful enemy in Pope Innocent VI, who persuaded Charles of Anjou to depose him by force.

The Fall of the Alamo, this day, March 6, 1836, after a siege by the massed Mexican forces of General Santa Anna against a resolute band of Texan defenders starting on February 23 and lasting 13 days.
One of the best known heroic sieges of all time, but in fact the Texans weren't even supposed to be there at all - Jim Bowie had been given instructions to destroy the Alamo and return with the men and artillery stationed there, but decided to stay put and defend the mission instead.
The Battle of the Alamo:
http://dingeengoete.blogspot.co.nz/2012 ... alamo.html
And a song from the inimitable Johnny Cash - Remember the Alamo

Davy Crockett reduced to using his gun as a club - in the end the Texans were overrun because they just couldn't reload quickly enough.
(Darn it, now I've got that pesky song from the Davy Crockett TV series I used to watch as a kid running around in my head - "Davy, Daaavy Crockett, King of the wild Frontier....
