26 February, 1266, saw the death of one of my favourite medieval historical figures, King Manfred of Sicily, bastard son of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. Handsome, brave and cultured, Manfred unfortunately had an implacable and powerful enemy in Pope Innocent VI, who persuaded Charles of Anjou to depose him by force.

The resulting Battle of Benevento between Charles' forces and those of Manfred resulted in Manfred's death in action and the end of Hohenstaufen rule in Italy.

By legend, when Manfred realised that his cause was hopeless, rather than be taken prisoner he tore off any identifying insignia, threw himself headlong into the fray with his soldiers and was slain. Charles refused him a burial when he was identified afterwards, but the French soldiers had been impressed by Manfred's valour and all took turns to lay a stone on his corpse. The cairn created was said to have been known for many years as the "rock of roses".

"The Discovery of Manfred's Body".

Charles treated Manfred's family appallingly - his wife and five small children were separated from each other and imprisoned in harsh conditions. (Some records also claim that Manfred's three little sons were blinded). Only one, a daughter called Beatrice, is known to have survived. Charles' rule in Sicily was a short one - he treated the Sicilians so badly that before too long they rose up against him and threw him out, choosing instead as king of Sicily Peter III of Aragon, husband of Constantia, Manfred’s eldest daughter by an earlier marriage.
