While Mary was pregnant with her first child, William became ill with smallpox and died. Mary's son William was born on her 19th birthday and grew up to marry his first cousin Mary. William and Mary later reigned in Great Britain as King William III and Queen Mary II. Mary, the Princess Royal died at Whitehall Palace of smallpox and was buried in the Henry VII Chapel at Westminster Abbey. William III also lost his wife Mary II to smallpox.

Margaret's first child, a daughter also named Margaret, was born 10 years later. Margaret then had two sons, Alexander and David, but both predeceased their father. Margaret died in 1275 and was buried at Dunfermline Abbey.
