Caernarvon Castle was built by Edward I of England after his defeat of the Welsh. Edward's son, the future Edward II, was born at the castle and was created the first English Prince of Wales. Charles was created Prince of Wales in 1958 but was not formally invested until 1969.

July 1, 1995 - Wedding of Princess Stephanie of Monaco (1st marriage) and Daniel Ducruet in Monaco
Their affair, which began in 1992, resulted in a marriage that lasted a little more than a year.

Emma was the mother of Edward the Confessor by her first marriage to Ethelred the Unready.

July 2, 1492 - Birth of Elizabeth, daughter of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York
Elizabeth was the second daughter and fourth child of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, daughter of Edward IV. Elizabeth suffered from some "wasting" disease and her death was caused by "atrophy." She died at Eltham in Kent at age 3 and was buried in Westminster Abbey near the shrine of Edward the Confessor.

July 2, 1644 - Oliver Cromwell defeats Prince Rupert of the Rhine, Duke of Cumberland at the Battle of Marston Moor
Prince Rupert was a grandson of King James I and a nephew of King Charles I.

July 2, 1903 - Birth of Olav V of Norway at Sandringham Estate, Norfolk, England
Birth Name: Prince Alexander Edward Christian Frederik of Denmark
The son of Prince Carl of Denmark and Princess Maud of the United Kingdom, he assumed the name Olav when his father became King Haakon VII of Norway in 1905.

July 2, 1932 - Death of Manuel II of Portugal in exile at Fulwell Lodge, London; buried at the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, Lisbon

July 2, 1959 - Wedding of Albert II of the Belgians and Paola Ruffo di Calabria in Brussels

Robert was the father of William the Conqueror.

July 3, 1423 – Birth of King Louis XI of France (the Prudent, the Spider King) in Bourges, Cher, France

July 3, 1642 - Death of Marie de Medici, second wife of Henri IV of France, at Cologne, Germany; heart is buried at Cologne Cathedral, other remains are buried at the Basilica of St. Denis

July 3, 1743 – Birth of Sofia Magdalena of Denmark and Norway, wife of Gustav III of Sweden, at Christiansborg Palace, Copenhagen

July 4, 1394 – Death of Mary de Bohun, first wife of Henry IV, at Peterborough Castle; buried at the Church of St Mary de Castro, Leicester
Mary died while delivering her daughter Philippa.

July 4, 1394 – Birth of Philippa, daughter of Henry IV, at Peterborough Castle
Philippa was the second daughter and seventh and youngest child of Henry IV and his first wife Mary de Bohun. She married King Eric VII of Denmark at age 12. Twenty-three years later, Philippa delivered a stillborn child and never fully recovered her health. She retired to a convent and died shortly thereafter.

July 4, 1666 – Birth of Charles, Duke of Kendal, son of James II, at St. James Palace, London, England
Charles was the third son and fifth child of James, Duke of York (later James II) and his first wife Anne Hyde. He died at St. James' Palace at age ten months and was buried at Westminster Abbey.

July 4, 1799 – Birth of Oscar I of Sweden and Norway in Paris, France
Born Joseph Francois Oscar Bernadotte

July 4, 1918 – Birth of King Taufa’ahau Tupou of Tonga at the Royal Palace, Nukuʻalofa, Tonga
The king died in 2006 and was succeeded by his son George Tupou V who died in 2012.

July 4, 1937 – Birth of Sonja Haraldsen, wife of Harald V of Norway in Oslo, Norway

July 4, 1942 - Birth of Prince Michael of Kent at Coppins, Iver, Buckinghamsire
Full name: Michael George Charles Franklin
Michael was born 6 weeks before the death of his father on active duty during World War II. Since he was born on American Independence Day, President Franklin Roosevelt was one of his godparents.

July 5, 1321 – Birth of Joan of the Tower, daughter of Edward II, at the Tower of London
Joan was the younger daughter and the fourth and youngest child of Edward II and Isabella of France. She was born in the Tower of London and was always known as Joan of the Tower. Joan married David, the son and heir of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots when she was only seven and David was only four. David and Joan had no children and Joan died in 1362 while visiting her brother Edward III. She was buried in the Grey Friars Church in London.

July 5, 1717 – Birth of Pedro III of Portugal
The younger son of King João V of Portugal, Pedro co-reigned with his wife and niece Queen Maria I.

July 5, 1866 – Wedding of Princess Helena, daughter of Queen Victoria, and Christian of Schleswig-Holstein at the Private Chapel, Windsor Castle

July 5, 1911 - Death of Maria Pia of Savoy, wife of Luís I of Portugal, in Turin, Italy; buried at the Basilica of Superga, near Turin, Italy

Blanche was the elder daughter of Henry IV and his first wife Mary de Bohun. She married Ludwig III, Elector of the Palatine and Duke of Bavaria in 1402.

July 6, 1483 - Coronation of Richard III
Richard’s wife Lady Anne Neville was crowned with him.

July 6, 1553 – Death of Edward VI at Greenwich Palace, London, England, buried at Westminster Abbey

July 6, 1598 – Birth of Kirsten Munk, morganatic second wife of Christian IV of Denmark

July 6, 1724 – Birth of Prince Johann Nepomuk Karl of Liechtenstein

July 6, 1796 - Birth of Tsar Nicholas I of Russia at Gatchina Palace

Madeleine died of tuberculosis seven weeks after her arrival in Edinburgh, a month before her 17th birthday.

July 7, 1972 – Death of King Talal of Jordan at Istanbul, Turkey; buried at the royal burial grounds at Raghadan Palace in Amman, Jordan
After being king for little more than a year, Talal abdicated for health reasons in favor of his son Hussein.

Margaret was the seventh daughter and tenth child of Edward I and his first wife Eleanor of Castile. She married John, son and heir of John I, Duke of Brabant at Westminster Abbey when she was 15.

July 8, 1332 – Death of Mary of Woodstock, daughter of Edward I, at Amesbury Abbey, Wiltshire, buried at Amesbury Abbey
The tenth child and sixth daughter of Edward I and his first wife Eleanor of Castile, Mary became a nun in 1285 and lived the rest of her life at the Benedictine convent at Amesbury, Wiltshire where she died and was buried in 1332.

July 8, 1337 – Death of William of Hatfield, son of Edward III, buried at York Minster
William was the second son and fourth child of Edward III and Philippa of Hainault. He died at age 5 months and was buried at York Minster.

July 8, 1786 – Birth of Karl, Grand Duke of Baden at Karlsruhe Palace

July 8, 1792 – Birth of Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, wife of Ludwig I of Bavaria in Seidingstadt, Duchy of Saxe-Hildburghausen (Germany)
Her wedding to Ludwig I of Bavaria was the first celebration of Oktoberfest.

July 8, 1850 - Death of Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, son of George III, at Cambridge House, Piccadilly, London; buried at Kensal Green Cemetery, London
Adolphus was the grandfather of Queen Mary, wife of George V.

July 8, 1859 – Death of Oscar I of Sweden at Stockholm; buried at Riddarholm Church in Stockholm

July 8, 1972 – Wedding of Prince Richard of Gloucester and Birgitte van Deurs, at St. Andrew Church, Barnwell, Northampton
