Louis was the son of Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. In 1917, when the British Royal Family stopped using German titles, his father Prince Louis of Battenberg became the Marquess of Milford-Haven and the family name became Mountbatten. Louis then used the courtesy title Lord Louis Mountbatten. He was subsequently created Viscount Mountbatten of Burma and then Earl Mountbatten of Burma. He was killed by the IRA along with other family members in 1979.

June 28, 1189 - Death of Matilda, daughter of Henry II, at Brunswick, Germany; buried at the Cathedral of St. Blasius, Brunswick
Born in 1159, Matilda was the eldest daughter of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. She married Henry V "the Lion," Duke of Saxony and Bavaria in 1168. Matilda and Henry had four sons and two daughters. Through their youngest son Wilhelm, born in Winchester in 1184 during a visit to England, they became ancestors in the direct male line of the House of Hanover. Matilda died at Brunswick and was buried in the Cathedral of St. Blasius there.

Frederick was very brutal and Mary's married life was unhappy. The couple separated in 1755 following Frederick's conversion to Roman Catholicism.

Sophia Dorothea was the only daughter of George I and Sophia Dorothea of Celle. She was 8 years old when her disgraced mother was divorced and banished to a German castle for the rest of her life. She married her first cousin Crown Prince Frederick William of Prussia and became Queen of Prussia in 1713. Frederick and Sophia Dorothea had seven sons and seven daughters and were the parents of Frederick the Great. Sophia survived her husband for 17 years, died at the Palace of Monbijou near Berlin and was buried at Potsdam.
