Princess Alexandra was the daughter of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna of Russia. She married Prince Ernest of Hohenlohe-Langenburg.

September 1, 1922 - Death of Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont, wife of Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, at Hinterris, Tyrol, Austria

September 1, 1928 - Ahmet Zog declares Albania a monarchy and proclaims himself king

September 2, 31 BC - Octavius Caesar, the future Emperor Augustus, defeats Mark Antony at the Battle of Actium

September 2, 1348 - Death of Joan, daughter of Edward III, at Bayonne, France, buried in Bayonne Cathedral
Born in 1335, Joan was the second daughter and third child of Edward III and Philippa of Hainault. Joan was to marry Infante Pedro of Castile, son and heir of Alfonso XI. She set out for Spain where the marriage was to take place in November, 1348. Upon reaching the European mainland, it was discovered that the plague had broken out. Unfortunately, Joan died of the plague and was buried at Bayonne Cathedral.

September 2, 1753 – Birth of Marie Josephine Louise of Savoy, wife of Louis XVIII of France

September 2, 1778 – Birth of Louis Bonaparte, King of Holland
Louis was the brother of Napoleon. He married Hortense Beauharnais, the daughter of Napoleon's first wife Josephine by her first marriage. Hortense and Louis were the parents of Napoleon III.

September 2, 1838 - Birth of Queen Liliuokalani, the last monarch of Hawaii

Sophie was the mother of Anne who married James VI of Scotland/James I of England.

September 4, 1870 – Emperor Napoleon III of France is deposed; Third Republic is declared

September 4, 1896 – Birth of Aspasia Manos, wife of Alexander I of Greece

September 4, 1948 - Abdication of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands in favor of her daughter Juliana

September 5, 1548 - Death of Catharine Parr, Henry VIII's sixth wife, at Sudeley Castle, Gloucestershire, England, buried at St. Mary's Church, Sudeley Castle
After the death of Henry VIII, Catharine Parr married Sir Thomas Seymour. She died of childbed fever after giving birth to her only child.

September 5, 1638 - Birth of Louis XIV of France

September 5, 1664 - Birth of Lady Charlotte Fitzroy, illegitimate daughter of Charles II by Barbara Palmer, 1st Duchess of Cleveland (aka Barbara Villiers, Countess of Castlemaine)

September 5, 1725 – Wedding of Louis XV of France and Maria Leszczyńska

September 5, 1987 – Birth of Pierre Casiraghi, son of Princess Caroline of Monaco

This morning I heard on NPR that 95 years ago today, the first Piggly Wiggly opened it's doors in Memphis, Tennessee. This was the first self-service supermarket in the United States.

September 7, 1151 – Death of Geoffrey V (the Handsome), Count of Anjou
Geoffrey was the father of Henry II of England.

September 7, 1362 - Death of Joan of the Tower, daughter of Edward II, at Hertford Castle, buried at Greyfriars Church, Newgate, London
Joan was the younger daughter and the fourth and youngest child of Edward II and Isabella of France. She was born in the Tower of London and was always known as Joan of the Tower. Joan married David, the son and heir of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots when she was only seven and David was only four. David and Joan had no children and Joan died in 1362 while visiting her brother Edward III.

September 7, 1533 - Birth of Elizabeth I at Greenwich Palace, London

September 7, 1534 - Wedding of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, and Lady Catherine Willoughby
Charles Brandon was the best friend of Henry VIII and the widower of his sister Mary. The marriage to Catherine Willoughby, Charles' ward and 35 years his junior, was a bit of a scandal.

September 7, 1683 – Birth of Maria Anna of Austria, wife of João V of Portugal

September 7, 1731- Death of Eudoxia Lopukhina, first wife of Peter the Great, at Novodevichy Convent in Moscow; buried at Smolensk Cathedral at the Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

September 7, 1809 - Death of Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke, Rama I of Thailand

September 7, 1817 – Birth of Louise of Hesse-Kassel, wife of Christian IX of Denmark
