Our local chapter of Democrats Drinking Liberally (yes, its really a group, national even) held their weekly Friday dinner in honor of that repeal. Great fun was had by all.

Happy memories of "Good Vibrations" :)

I just had the interesting thought that "today" will be not necessarily be the same day for everyone on this forum-- it all depends whereabouts in the world you happen to be living!

The Thirteenth Amendment to the US Consitution was adopted on Dec 6, 1865, to officially abolish slavery and prohibit involuntary servitude (with exceptions for convicted criminals). The Amendment was intended to bolster the Emancipation Proclamation to guarantee enslavement in all states would be permanently outlawed and to eliminate the market for human trafficking.
eliminate the market for human trafficking.
It's just a shame that 143 years later human trafficking is a billion dollar a year industry.

Right, Alaric. In the States, I'm sure 'sweatshop' slavery of illegal/undocumented people hasn't been eliminated, and now trafficking of 'sex slaves' is a real issue. I guess a fitting modern term would be 'underground slavery'. Exploitation of and violence toward vulnerable human beings will always require the need for 'champions'. A law is just a humane hope on paper unless action is taken.

King Edward VIII signed instruments of abdication on Dec 10, 1936, in the presence of his three brothers. By Dec 11, he was Prince Edward again.
