I think the setting of BR is similar to Atonement ie English country house between the wars but that's where the similarity ends. I wouldn't think it's anything like Cruel Intentions/Dangerous Liaisons though!
I agree Ash, I don't know how the film can match the TV series (haven't seen the film myself) but I think the film concentrates mainly on the love triangle between Charles, Sebastian and Julia whereas the series of course covered a lot of what happened after they all got involved with each other, as well as how they all first met.
