Saw a delightful movie, I had heard nothing about, but went to see because of the cast. Chef is a sweet, funny, father-son story with an indie film feel. Highly recommended, but beware, you'll be hungry when you leave! Written, directed and starring Jon Favreau as a divorced dad and chef in crisis as he tries to repair his career and his life. Supporting cast includes Dustin Hoffman, Scarlett Johannson, Robert Downey, Jr., Oliver Platt, Amy Sedaris, Bobby Cannavale, and John Leguizamo.

Finishing off a few days' dipping into Craig as Bond, Skyfall has reached the bleak bit, and it looks cold. Amused that they have the line "From the Reformation times" right as M says, "A priest's hole" - as if the explanation is necessary. Every now and then, I do appreciate not being the American who needs everything dumbed down for me (though, I have to say, Americans who don't know what a priest's hole is probably don't know enough about the Reformation for it to help ...).

Before this, I enjoyed Trek 2009 and Into Darkness. Wherever shall I go next? Somewhere else heavy on the color saturation and spectacular setpieces? (Hmm, this emoticon says it's sarcastic/rolls-eyes; to me, it looks more quizzical.)

Saw Mr Turner (the film about JMW Turner during his later years) last week - general consensus of opinion from myself, the two friends I saw it with and a work colleague who saw it last night is that it's way too long, and very slow with some of the more interesting bits skimmed over, and he is revolting. It's certainly a full-blooded lead performance although I don't think it's actually that good - at times he grunts like a pig, and during one scene which is meant to be sad - we all laughed which I don't think was meant to be the right audience reaction. And some of the supporting turns veer close to parody. It does look beautiful though, I think the set designers and decorators did brilliantly.

I spent a sword and sandal weekend watching Immortals (2011) and The Legend of Hercules (2014) on cable. Hilarious stuff. You can read my thoughts on my blog.
