The Lion in Winter

Post by Jemidar » Thu June 24th, 2010, 3:46 pm
Really, Jemidar? I watch it every few years, and each time I love it more.
Don't get me wrong, I did like it--just not as much as I expected to. Loved Katherine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole (who wouldn't?) as they both suited the roles...they're almost my idea of perfect. But the support cast wasn't quite up to it and I didn't like the way John was portrayed.

However, I thought it did capture the essence of Henry & Eleanor's relationship beautifully :) .
Jemidar, have you tried the more recent version with Glenn Close and Patrick Stewart in the lead roles. It was done for TV, so they could fit in more of the original play. Interestingly, the playright did the screenplays for both versions.

Though the acting is splendid, the music always kind of put me off the film version. When I was a child that theme combined with the schots during the opening credits was creepy, maybe even a little frightening.
Yes, the beginning shots did put me off a little too and I'm far from young...lol. And yes, I also have the Patrick Stewart/Glenn close version here for comparison, but haven't got around to watching it yet.

I did read the play shortly after watching the movie, just to see what the differences were, but there's not a lot of real difference. Enjoyed reading it more than watching it though, as the dialogue jumped off the page and the inaccuracies/anachronisms didn't bother me as much.

Will see how I go with the made for TV version. Should be interesting :) .

"When In Rome", cute movie, not a lot of brain cells needed to enjoy it.

I couldn't stay awake to watch the whole movie (When in Rome) I kept thinking to myself ok it'll pick up soon...it never did.

Letters to Juilet, cute little romance.

Saw Toy Story III which I liked, tho I liked the original better (warning: there are scenes in this movie that could be frightening to young children)

Also saw the new Karate Kid, which I really liked (tho the actual fighting scenes made me cringe) The kid in the lead is pretty amazing.

Well that's not so surprising, his father being Will Smith, who I've always liked.

I knew not to expect a lot, I even told Harm that if we didn't like it we could watch something else, but I found myself laughing and she liked it as well.

The Princess and the Frog. I think I like this one more than the kids did. Though the two year old watched all of it in one sitting. Then again, she's a girl. The boys don't seem too interested. Love the music.

Jemidar, do tell us how you like the Stewart/Close TLIW.

Sonja, I am not up on actors much outside of their roles, but now that you mention it, yes, I can see the genes! I love Will Smith, and Jaden looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Hope he gets roles as an adult, and not just coz he's a cute kid with a famous dad.

"State of Play" - the politics lost me after a while, but thought it was quite good, well-acted and they kept a fair bit from the original UK series (which was superb) but made it their own at the same time.

IMO, it's the best dialogue and delivery of dialogue in any film, all-time. But that's all Hepburn and O'Toole.

I saw A-Team over the weekend and enjoyed it. Fun, enjoyable action, military action. Basically, they created a backstory for the A-team (a present day/near future backstory, that is) and left it wide open for future movies. I, for one, would enjoy seeing a new one every few years.
