Don't get me wrong, I did like it--just not as much as I expected to. Loved Katherine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole (who wouldn't?) as they both suited the roles...they're almost my idea of perfect. But the support cast wasn't quite up to it and I didn't like the way John was portrayed.
However, I thought it did capture the essence of Henry & Eleanor's relationship beautifully

Yes, the beginning shots did put me off a little too and I'm far from young...lol. And yes, I also have the Patrick Stewart/Glenn close version here for comparison, but haven't got around to watching it yet.
I did read the play shortly after watching the movie, just to see what the differences were, but there's not a lot of real difference. Enjoyed reading it more than watching it though, as the dialogue jumped off the page and the inaccuracies/anachronisms didn't bother me as much.
Will see how I go with the made for TV version. Should be interesting
