If you could have a sequel...

Post by michellemoran » Wed November 12th, 2008, 1:03 am

If you could magically make an author reappear (assuming they're dead) and write a sequel to something they've written, which book would you want to see continued?

Great question! I'd love to see sequels to most of Jane Austen's works (written by Austen herself, that is) and to Our Mutual Friend by Dickens. I'd also like to see John Updike (I know he's still alive) give us a sequel to Rabbit Remembered so we could see how the next generation of Angstroms are getting on.

I know this is almost sacreligious (am I spelling that right???), but I would like to see a sequel of Gone With The Wind written by Margaret Mitchell.

Interest in HF: I can't answer this in 100 characters. Sorry.
Favourite HF book: Checkmate, the final novel in the Lymond series
Preferred HF: Literary novels. Late medieval and Renaissance.

Not sacreligious at all, because Margaret Mitchell always planned to write a sequel, didn't she? It's a novel that just cries out for a sequel, which is undoubtedly why so many modern authors have tried their hands at it. But none of them were Margaret Mitchell, and all have been, ultimately, unsatisfying, even if fun to read. Gone With the Wind is the book that sprang immediately to my mind, as well.

Me too, Misfit (and Margaret)! In fact, that's what made me think of this question. I saw a posting on GalleyCat about how MM sold a million copies of GWW in the Depression, and I wondered how her own sequel would have compared to Scarlett.

Although I'd love to see a sequel to Pride and Prejudice as well ;]

Gone with the Wind immediately came to my mind as well. Maybe Forever Amber as well.

Oh yes, that would be awesome. I would have loved to see the look on Amber's face when she arrived in the colonies and........ let's just say had one hell of a surprise!

I always wanted the Anne of Green Gables books to continue and follow her children's lives further.
