It is a very sad and tragic story, but as one who grew up on the south side of Chicago, I feel I have to step up and say it isn't all that bad.
Of course like any big metropolitan area, there are some pockets where poverty and crime are high, but there are a lot of great and vibrant communities on the south side. And areas that only 20 years ago were highly dangerous are now flourishing. Barack Obama lives on the south side. So does the Mayor. And if the 2016 Olympics come to Chicago, the venues planned will be mostly along the lake shore on the south side.
Chicago is a great and beautiful city, and it seems to get better and better all the time.
