Thanks for the link to BlueEmerald's list, Laura! One of the things I especially like about it is it's a thoughtful compilation that includes a lot of novels that don't usually appear on lists like these - in categories that are a little different than the ones other lists use. I'll be going back to it!

Gyrehead, your post about Renault's "The Persian Boy" reminds me of when I first read Iris Murdoch's "The Bell" I was very young and innocent then, and didn't know anything about the homosexuality which made for so much of dynamic tension in the story, so that was a bit of a surprise and an education for me!I am rather embarassed I did not include Mary Renault on my list. Particularly The Persian Boy. I was a complete innocent when I read it the first time and it never occured to me that it might strike many as being salacious for its time.
