I have a couple of things going. Fiction: Eleanor Catton's The Luminaries, which I'm afraid is too intricate and slow-moving for me to follow all the plot details, but I am determined to finish it (the NY Times reviewer said it gets more exciting about 2/3 of the way through). Nonfiction: Joshua Shenk's Lincoln's Melancholy, which is excellent.

Just finished "The Garden of Evening Mists" by Tan Twan Eng for my HF book group. It took me far too long to plough through what isn't a particularly long book. It's very slow and emotion-less in the first half, but there is a payoff as the gut of the book steadily kicks in from about 60% of the way in. Overall, pretty good but liable to lose you early on.
Just started "The Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens for my general book group.

I'm reading Kate's Progress by Cynthia Harrod Eagles. I enjoy the Morland Dynasty by the same author. This is a stand alone contemporary novel do I hope enjoy it just as much!

Finished the first book in the When Women Were Warriors series. Not sure I'll continue. Given its title, I was expecting a more action-oriented story. Well written, interesting premise, good world building, but the story is very interior. Still working on Saving Fish from Drowning by Amy Tan which suffers from being my hardback "bed" book. I've been too tired to read several nights, so it gets no attention. Just ordered a couple of research books about Nero that I'm looking forward to.
Bailing out on The Secret of the Pink Carnation after reading 20%. Going back to Queen Victoria's Granddaughters.
