Yesterday I went to Ingatestone Hall in Essex - it's a lovely house, well worth visiting, and Mary Braddon stayed there, and was inspired to base the house in the novel on this one, and they also used the house as a location for the TV adaptation in 2000.

Cool! I saw the show when it was broadcasted on PBS here in the US.

I vaguely remember it too, and actually correctly remembered the plot -
