Yep, that's happened to me a couple of times. Not only did I nearly miss a connection in one case, but I was stuck with nothing to read. Seriously, what is an e-reader in flight mode going to do to a plane sitting between the runway and the arrival gate? But try to argue and you'll probably end up getting arrested

Well, if you fly very often that's bound to happen but those situations aren't the norm. I'm a contingency planner, so I always have something like a magazine as well. I probably react strongly to these complaints because I work for very spoiled, privileged executive types who will complain when they have to set aside their PDA for even a few minutes. Rules are for other people, not them, and they'll break them if they think they can get away with it. They also use their devices in really unacceptable ways (e.g., conf calls while on public transportation which should be a no-no because you shouldn't risk being overheard). I don't even want to know how many times I've probably been called from a restroom or other such place. I'm a little tired of this culture of instant gratification technology has created. Anyhow... speaking personally, I can't read productively during take-off or landing. The plane makes too much noise, people are invariably yammering, squirming or otherwise restless to the point of making the environment too distracting. I do read once things have settled down and we're in the air.

Interest in HF: started in childhood with the classics, which, IMHO are HF even if they were contemporary when written.
Favourite HF book: Prince of Foxes, by Samuel Shellabarger
Preferred HF: Currently prefer 1600 and earlier, but I'll read anything that keeps me turning the page.
Location: California Bay Area

I'm with you, Ludmilla. I can't relax until we are safely in the air. Take-offs and landings are not my favorite part of flying. At least not since my husband got his pilot's license--he's a complete white-knuckle flyer on commercial flights, and it's contagious!

He said that the recent KoreanAir crash at SFO was because the pilot-in-training and the pilot-trainer each thought the other was in control of the plane, and they were deferring to the other until they both realized the situation -- too late!

Here's a link about it - you can download a free Kindle app onto your computer, tablet, smartphone or just to view in your browser.
Also, the cloud reader doesn't require it to be downloaded or installed but it only works with Chrome, Firefox, or Safari right now (not IE).
