I've been reading Iain Gale's Jack Steel trilogy about a grenadier serving in Europe with the Duke of Marlborough (Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series was clearly the template, but the period makes them interesting).
Anyway, I learnt that Marlborough's sister Arabella Churchill was mistress to James II and bore him a son - James FitzJames. Handsome, gallant, a noted soldier and founder of not just one but two noble houses, he seems like an ideal subject for a historical novel, but I haven't found one to date. Anyone else have any ideas?
