This Day in History

Post by Rowan » Mon May 20th, 2013, 3:19 pm

I'm starting this thread in hopes of people sharing obscure bits of information about things that happened on each date of the year.

20 May

On this day in 1883, a small series of eruptions began on Krakatoa leading to the super eruption in August of that year.

Missed this one for yesterday...

29 May

The Paris premiere of Igor Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring' in 1913 was a disaster, some say on the level of rioting. Much of the audience made noises and sang to the point that the choreographer had to stand at the side of the stage shouting the count to the ballet dancers so they would know where they were in the performance.

There's a This Day in History thread in General Discussion isn't there? I don't tend to read it, it focuses heavily on recent/European/royal events, so I'll keep an eye on you, Rowan! ;)
