One of those tragic stories that makes me go Waaaaa! Often hidden among the other more immediate costs of war is the destruction of historic relics and artefacts. Malian rebels occupying the world heritage cultural centre of Timbuktu have burned hundreds of priceless manuscripts dating from the fabled city's rich medieval past.

Last year Islamic extremists excelled themselves by systematically destroying many of Timbuktu's ancient Sufi tombs.
