Faith's 2013 reads

Post by fljustice » Wed January 16th, 2013, 5:27 pm

I had a goal of 52 books last year and read 60--mostly due to a broken wrist and a bike accident that sidelined me for several weeks in the spring and late summer. This year I hope to do more writing, so will stick to my goal of a book a week and hope I make it!

1. The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien (reread, ebook)
2. A Dance with Dragons by George R. R. Martin (should count as two books!)
3. The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley (too romantic and slow for my taste, ebook)
4. Hawk of May by Gillian Bradshaw (Arthur story, early Bradshaw, ebook)
5. Mariana by Susanna Kearsley (better than TWS, ebook)

6. Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates: Using Philosophy (and Jokes!) to Explore Life, Death, the Afterlife, and Everything in Between by Thomas W. Cathcart, Daniel M. Klein, Daniel Klein (funny exploration of an unfunny topic)
7. Mistress of Rome (Rome #1) by Kate Quinn (fast-paced, good read)
8. A Place Beyond Courage (William Marshal #1) by Elizabeth Chadwick (ebook, well-researched, good read)
9. The Scarlet Lion (William Marshal #3) by Elizabeth Chadwick (ebook, well-researched, good read)

I did a writing challenge this month and didn't read much outside my research books. My main read was a very long book. I thought I might get through the month without finishing a single book (I don't think that has ever happened!) but on the last night of March finished:

10. Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin (ebook, 900 pages of great biography--should count as three books!)

Trying to pick up the pace and read some shorter books:

14. Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (ebook, liked this literary take)
15. The Ruins of Lace by Iris Anthony (ebook, good writing, meh story)
16. The Greek Roman Empire: Power and Belief Under Theodosius II by Fergus Millar (useful research book)
17. The Children of Henry VIII by John Guy (less useful research book--only for beginners in Tudor history)

18. Spartacus: The Gladiator by Ben Kane (ebook, looking forward to the sequel)
19. The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman (his twisty best)
20. Daughters of Copper Woman by Anne Cameron (loved it!)

Getting behind again while I read door stoppers and try to keep up the pace with my writing.
