Vortigern doesn't appear in Sword At Sunset, but he still has quite a presence as a sort of shadow looming from the fairly recent past. Some of his decisions are still playing out
Thanks, Carla- that would explain why I felt that he was there, but couldn't actually remember any scene where he features :)

Lady of Bennachie, I'm not sure that AD500 is a novel rather than an entertaining history? I've seen it promoted as non-fiction. I did love Young's Farewell Britannia, which is a sort of episodic novel covering the centuries of Roman rule in Britain - Ben has a review of it up currently.

Favourite HF book: Here Be Dragons by Sharon Kay Penman
Preferred HF: Any time period/location. Timeslip, usually prefer female POV. Also love Gothic melodrama.
Location: Northeast Scotland

I have both of these books on my bookshelf - I need to actually get around to reading them! I'm not sure about AD 500, the reviews on Amazon describe it as a fictional account of a scholar's trip around Britain in 500 AD, concentrating on the more outrageous, entertaining stuff, and although it's based heavily on fact there aren't many sources/footnotes. So yes it must be something in between.
