Last night episode!!!!

I didn't know anything about what was going to happen. I thought Sybil was the actor who left. To be honest I am glad that it was Matthew, cause he is dull as tombs. I mean I think Lady Mary's character can grow more now that he is gone. I can see her becoming a strict traditionalist(when it suits her) and trying to save Downton no matter what. And Lady Edith will become a more modern woman, with a lover n everything!

I totally agree with you re the male character. The other character you mentioned was in the 3rd series.

Yeah how come they never show the holiday specials on PBS in the states. I don't think I have seen one yet although I watched the first two seasons on Netflix.

Yes, I agree the Scotland visit was quite fun to watch and seeing what the Downton staff was doing while they were away!
There was a showing of "Secrets of Highclere Castle" afterwards on the PBS station I was watching. Did anyone else catch that?

I agree.

Matthew bored me rigid and to be honest I never thought there was any chemistry between him and Mary. I wont miss him in the series...but the death of Sybil was a shock!

A Character's death

I actually loved the death of Sybil. Now, dont get me wrong I loved her character but to be honest I thought the whole Downton crew got away unscathed when it came to WWI and the Flu epidemic.

Women died in childbirth, a lot of them did. And while it sucked I thought it portrayed the time well.

And Matthew's ethics was tiring. Plus I dont think he was a good match for Mary. He doesnt have her passion and drive.

Well that sucks!

I knew someone was going to die and spent the entire episode watching for the hints of who it would be. Figured it wouldn't be Mary, because two childbirth deaths would be one too many. I thought it might be someone "downstairs" since we lost an "upstairs" person early on and--because it's good drama to cut someone down when their most happy--thought it might be Anna or Bates. Didn't see Mathew coming until he was racing in the car with a big smile on his face and the show was almost over. Lots of cliched filming, cutting back and forth between the ominous truck and the speeding car, but the cuts from the Mary and baby to Mathew's bleeding corpse was a bit much!

Agree with previous comments that this will let Mary grow as a character. We'll see.

BTW, was the finale really the Christmas special? Seemed like late fall to me.
