If you enjoy authors like Ben Elton you'll very likely take to Tom Holt.
I hadn't heard of Ben Elton, but then I looked him up on Wikipedia...Black Adder, loved that. And I did see his musical We Will Rock You when in London in 2005.

I'm reading Riordan's The Lost Hero which brings in Roman mythology and there is a description of Chiron getting into the wheelchair. There is some magic involved.

I'm reading The Shadow Queen by Rebecca Dean. Apparently this book only covers Wallis' life up to her meeting with Edward. I can't decide if there wasn't enough material in her early years to make for an interesting book, or if the author hasn't made it interesting enough. I'm bored :(

You'd probably have found a biography of Wallis more entertaining.

You are probably right about that. I haven't read the author's notes yet, but from what I've heard on the Amazon reviews a lot of the *supporting* cast is fictional.

It will be interesting to see what you make of Tom Holt, Susan :) He's very much in the anarchic, irreverent tradition of British humour which those of us who've grown up with the Goons, Monty Python and Blackadder are familiar with- it's often black and bawdy, but also sharp, witty and wise.

A "Sister Fidelma" mystery by Peter Tremayne, Behold a Pale Horse. This is a long-running mystery series set (mostly) in 7th-century Ireland, and I've been meaning to read one for some time but just hadn't gotten around to it. In Behold a Pale Horse, Sister Fidelma is traveling back from Rome, has to wait for a ship in Genoa, and stumbles onto a mystery.
Browse over 5000 historical novel listings (probably well over 5000 by now, but I haven't re-counted lately) and over 700 reviews at www.HistoricalNovels.info

I'm very fond of Sister Fidelma and her Saxon partner, Brother Eadulf, and read many of the earlier books in the series, though haven't caught up with about the last three, I think.

Peter Tremayne is a pseudonym for Celtic scholar Peter Berresford Ellis. Interestingly Ellis has both Saxon and Celtic heritage himself.

Then Holt will be fine with me. I love Monty Python. We watched them way back when and we have a DVD collection of all the shows.

Actually, I discovered Elton long before I heard of Black Adder. He wrote a book called This Other Eden, that my sci fi book club was reading. A hilarious and at the same time sobering story of a media mogul who controls the news to the point that he causes events to happen that perpetuate the rumor that the world is about to end. It was written a few decades ago. Back then, I read it as a warning of our future. Now, I think its already here. Anyway, very good book, tho he gets into lots of moralizing at the end.

Black Adder was wonderful - did you see the Christmas Carol one? Oh my...
