Post by writerinthenorth » Thu March 22nd, 2012, 2:50 pm

Just to let you know I have written an extensive blog posting about the facts behind the women featured in my new novel Mr Stephenson's Regret. You can find the posting here.

Please remember that while authors are welcome to post here, they need to actively participate in other areas of the forum as well or they will be deleted as spammers. Most of your recent posts have been about your books.

True, but that's somewhat skewed because I was using the publication of my new book to make more general points, not simply promoting it. I do have a history of wider participation too. I do take your point, however, of course.

I have to agree with writerinthenorth. He has a history of participating in other areas of the forum. Less so in recent weeks, but I imagine that's only because he's been so busy and focused on his new book.

Although I'm pretty new here, I do know that Writerinthenorth does more than just promote his books (here and on other sites). I agree with LoveHistory. His lack of particpation in the general forums in the past few weeks is probably more the result of preparing for his signing and the launch of this work. I know that I run into time issues myself between a full-time job, my own writing, and trying to participate on the several forums to which I belong.

I'm busy myself, but I think if someone finds time to come to the forum to promote his book, he can also find time to participate in the forum in other respects. (It really doesn't take all that much effort.) Since you're new here, you (and Writerinthenorth) may not realize that a while back, we had a number of drive-by authors who would come here only to promote their books. That irritated a number of members, and hence we made a policy that only authors who participated in the forum in other respects would be allowed to promote their books here.

I understand and I also appreciate the effort to keep the discussions free of just self-promotion. I'm a writer but I'm also a reader of historical fiction so enjoy discussing it with others who love it too.

Taking part

My feeling is that the most valuable way you can contribute to the discussions is by reference to your own work (and sometimes your own frustrations). I take a similar approach to my blog writing. My feeling is that people like to see views backed by solid, real-life examples - I know that's what I look for in my explorations.
