KDP solicited all the Kindle authors for this program. The hitch is Kindle exclusivity for three month with an automatic renewal unless the author opts out. That means the author has to take the ebook out of circulation on all other platforms (Nook, iBooks, Kobo, etc.) for three months and remember to opt out if they don't get enough revenue from their share of the kitty to make up the losses from the other markets. Lots of discussion on author sites about this program. Some believe it's another Amazon 800-pound gorilla move. Kindle Select is a fee-based program and they're rounding up "exclusive" content for the members. It's probably not worth it for established books, but some see it as a good "promotional" move for new books...if they remember to opt out and broaden the market. Afterall, Kindle isn't the only ereader out there.
Thanks for that. It's a win-win for readers like me, getting a chance to try books we'd not normally do when they come up free. And perhaps the authors can pick up some reviews from the Amazon regulars.

This sequel is free on Kindle - " Gold Under Ice" by Carol Buchanan. Has anyone read "God's Thunderbolt" which is free for Prime members?

By the way, how do you imbed the link in the text to go straight to the book?

I haven't read God's Thunderbolt, but I checked Worldcat and I should be able to get it via interlibrary loan. BTW, if Buchanan has signed up the the new Amazon Kindle/Author program, I'd hang tight. It might eventually pop up free as well.

To get the URL in your post, highlight the word(s) you want to use. Look at the top of the comment box and Click the insert link button (just right of the indent buttons. A box opens. Paste the URL there.

Do they participate in interlibrary loan? Ask them. I've received books from all over the US at no charge, and there were enough listings of Buchannan's book that your chances are good. I just looked at B&N and only see the paperback issue of the book listed, so hang tight. I'm guessing she's on the Amazon program with that too and we might see it eventually. I can wait...
