I just visited the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. They lay out his work in chronological order so you see his evolution as a painter. He was brilliant and troubled, checking himself into a mental institution for a time after a breakdown. It's an interesting theory and works as well as a suicide attempt, but I guess we'll never know.
