Is Hotmail a bad idea for querying?

Post by Alisha Marie Klapheke » Mon June 13th, 2011, 7:11 pm

Okay, I'm not querying quite yet but I was just wondering...is there anything wrong with using my Hotmail to send out my queries? Thanks for taking a minute to read this. Have a great day!

I don't see why hotmail would pose a problem, but maybe I'm not fully understanding your concern.

Is it that hotmail accounts are free and perhaps have a stigma? Or is it a reliability concern with hotmail in particular? Or is it that you wonder if email queries in general are a bad idea?

When I first queried my agent in 2007, she only accepted email queries (which was rare then, but I have noticed is far more frequent now). I used my Yahoo account, and she responded to me immediately.

I am worried about formatting problems and the email bouncing back.

Formatting can certainly be tricky.

I work in Word, so what I did was to convert the pages and synopsis I wanted to send to an .rtf (Rich Text Format) document. It was as easy as doing a "Save As" and changing the option in the "Save as Type" option in the field beneath the file name.

Then, from the .rtf version, I copied and pasted into the body of the email.
I checked it by mailing it to myself first, and when everything looked the way I wanted it to look, I mailed it to my agent.

I haven't tried it yet, but I will. You are so kind to help me out and your directions are clear. I'm going to work on it this weekend when work slows down a bit. Thanks again!

I do hope it works for you. I know how frustrating these technical things can be... :)
