Newly translated Russian historical novels

Post by cyura » Sun September 21st, 2008, 2:34 am

Two classic novels by talented Russian author Nikolai Grigorevich Smirnov (1890-1933) have finally found their way out of Russia and into the hands of English speakers. These books take the reader on culturally rich journeys through Russia (and throughout the world) during the early years of socialism -- Jack Vosmerkin - The American -- and during the Imperialistic 18th century -- The Land of the Sun. Brief summaries of some newly available Russian books:

JACK VOSMERKIN - THE AMERICAN is an epic tale about a Russian boy who travels around the globe by accident during the early Soviet years, returning to Russia to combine Russian and Western culture in a remarkable, never predictable journey.

THE LAND OF THE SUN lets the reader relive a life in exile, starting in Kamchatka, during the age of Imperialism, and then takes its narrator, a Russian youth, far beyond Russia's borders, where he and fellow countrymen must adapt to a life they'd never imagined, while never losing their Russian spirit.

Excellent. :) I love Russia and Russian history, so I'll put them down on the list to read one day.

Apparently there's a film from 1986 about Jack Vosmyorkin.

And what is really cool is that they are translated by an amateur, who did it because he wanted to.

Just out of Russia...

Post by cyura » Mon October 20th, 2008, 12:13 am

Two classic Russian historical novels have just become available beyond Russia’s borders (in Russian or English). These books are culturally rich, and appropriate for readers of all ages (see the summaries at the bottom of this page). They are only available at the site below, where you will also find free book samples:

Best regards,

Clay

Here are brief book summaries, but be sure to look at the samples for more details:
