Yes, which is what got me started on the research of "Dark Age" England. I am currently reading that book and love it! But I wanted to know more about the history and the people mentioned, so I pulled out my "Mammoth Book of British Kings and Queens" and then had an ahha moment (why I didn't have it before, I'll never know). England was split up into these separate kingdoms-which means my book challenge just because 10x harder! Hence the request for more suggestions pre-King Alfred time period.

That's why I'm sticking to Post-Conquest NF, I want to at least try to finish this challenge in the next few years LOL!

So bad news-every recommendation on William the Conqueror's children is either out of print and extremely expensive or not in my library  . So I guess I really don't have options between William and Henry II. Any other ideas? I'm putting together a list of all of the recommendations, the books I have, and the ones I need and will try to share when possible.

Would your library be able to get you any of these books as interloans? Might be worth a try if you haven't already checked out that option.

Just recommended a book the other day to a friend that might be of interest to you. It's just a small book but The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett, featuring Queen Eliz II is quite charmingly quirky.

Definitely try interlibrary loans before giving up - you'd be surprised what they can find. If you want to get a good *feel* whether or not you'll be successful, I've found WorldCat's search to be an excellent tool. If you find plenty of US libraries listed your luck should hold. If it's only the U of Wisconson, you'll get whacked with a lending fee

I've asked about interlibrary loans before and they weren't very receptive. That was before our library system went statewide, so I suppose I can ask. You would think you could do that on their online system, but apparently not. Grrrr! I did buy Elizabeth Chadwick's The Running Vixen and Leopard Unleashed for William's sons. Hopefully they get here soon (they are coming from bookdepository, so hard to tell!)

I can't imagine why any library would make it so difficult, and libraries all over the country participate - colleges, city, county and even a Benedictine Abbey! I've even got 100 + year old editions of Dumas. Granted, my county has a large well run system, but I've received ILL's from some very small cities, and you can't tell me Seaside and North Bend Oregon have huge library systems. I'd push them on it. Here's an example of the online form I fill out for ILL and/or purchase request. Very very rarely do they come back and say we tried, but sorry we can't get it.

Is there a way to set up something so I can attach Excel spreadsheets? I don't know if that requires an administrator or if it is even possible?? I wanted to attach my booklist but it's in Excel. I can always copy and paste if needed.

You can add attachments (scroll down below your comment window), but I don't see an Excel option. You could scan to PDF though.

You could, of course, make it even harder by adding the separate Scots and Welsh kingdoms, too and make the challenge slightly less anglo-centric.
