Ok, it does sound a lot like the Kauffman book, but it's been so long I can't be sure, but the girl dressing as a boy joining Richard I is right. I can't even remember if I read the whole thing!

I enjoyed the first two when they originally came out- they're not very probable, but a fun romp. The third one was written quite a bit later but the reviews for it are so dire I haven't felt encouraged to track it down.

I don't remember anything about a cross dressing girl in the Rofheart book (but I wouldn't swear to it 100%!)
