King and Queens of France??

Post by Brenna » Mon January 17th, 2011, 1:37 am

So I've been getting into a lot of historical fiction based in France and thought I would get a reference book on the Kings and Queens of France. However, I went searching and couldn't find one! Not anywhere!! What is the deal? You can find about a trillion (ok maybe not that many) books on Britain's Kings and Queens but not on Kings or Queens of any other country. Anybody have some suggestions??

I have a reference book entitled Fleur de Lys: The Kings and Queens of France by Joy Law. It's out of print (from 1976), but gives the basics on each monarch and genealogical tables.

Another reference is The Lives of the Kings and Queens of France by the Duc de Castries. Also, Lines Of Succession - Heraldry Of The Royal Families Of Europe looks at Europe's royal families and how they're interrelated; it has narrative sections as well as genealogies. All are available secondhand on Amazon.

If you've got plenty of time (and maybe money or/or access to a helpful library) you might enjoy trawling through the lists at the World of Royalty website for lots of ideas.

There is a bit of news relating to French royalty at the top of this page, so keep scrolling down past the articles about Napoleon's silk briefs for the book list :)

I have this short book titled Genealogy of the Kings of France and their Wives by Claude Wenzler, published by Editions Ouest-France. It's an English language edition.
I bought this while on summer study aboard in Paris in July '04.
