Rockygirl's 2011 Reads

Post by rockygirl » Sat January 1st, 2011, 2:03 am

New Year's Resolution---I resolve to keep this thread updated. I kind of petered out last year when I had to do a lot of professional reading all at once.

Well, for the next few months the list will probably be a better place to get YA fiction ideas than historical fiction, but here's the first list.

1. The 39 Clues, Books 1 & 2 (YA)--interesting thing about this series is that each book is written by a different author--Book 1 by Rick Riordan and Book 2 by Gordon Korman.

2. Virals by Kathy Reichs (YA)

3. Buttons and Bones by Monica Ferris (Mystery)

4. SPQR XIII The Year of Confusion by John Maddox Roberts (historical mystery set in ancient Rome)

I thought I was going to go on an ancient history kick, but Mistress of Rome seems to be spoiling that urge. I'm hoping it gets better.

I finished Mistress of Rome, which did not get better. :(

I seem to recall Divia being rather underwhelmed with it also. I chose not to read that one.

I loved it but I've read some not so good reviews about it.

My Lady Pocahontas by Kathleen Kudlinski. (YA, HF)

I liked it, but I can't see many of my students reading it and liking it.

This one isn't HF, and it's YA, but put it on your list, because it's extraordinarily well-done. A Mango Shaped Space by Wendy Mass is about a girl with synesthesia, a real condition in which people see letters, numbers, and sounds in colors. Very interesting.

Nobody's Princess and Nobody's Prize, a pair of novels by Esther Friesner, about the teenaged Helen of Troy. Good YA reads, with plenty of HF about Greece.

Murder on Monday by Ann Purser (Mystery). I had the strangest feeling that I had read this one before, but I'm not sure.
