Publisher's Weekly gives the details. It looks like they're going into direct competition with Amazon.

Google has launched an ebook store
This morning NPR aired the first in a series of reports about the future of bookstores. It has been suggested that Google's new e-reader service will be good for independent booksellers, since they will be able to sell Google's ebooks from their websites. Incidentally, it's thought that Amazon's exclusionary practices (their Kindle will only play books that are purchased from Amazon) might end up hurting them.

Go Google! As long as they don't turn into the monster they're battling, more power to 'em.
I may sell my new novel through them.
Love their free section. I hope they get more cover designs up, though the green and blue are kind of nice.
The store URL is easy to remember too. It's the google address with "/ebooks" after it.

This article talks about how brick and mortar (mostly independent) bookstores are selling Google ebooks and getting a cut. I'm for anything that keeps local indie bookstores out there!
