The Bad Sex Award

Post by Misfit » Wed December 1st, 2010, 1:44 am

Spotted over at Dear Author,
The Bad Sex writing award was given to Rowan Summerville for a single line:

Rowan Somerville won the Bad Sex in Fiction Award, the U.K.’s “most dreaded literary prize,” for a scene in which a nipple is likened to the upturned “nose of the loveliest nocturnal animal, sniffing in the night.”

Somervillle was on hand to accept her award and did so with grace. Can you imagine this happening in romancelandia? No, me either.

Aw, I kind of like it.
Browse over 5000 historical novel listings (probably well over 5000 by now, but I haven't re-counted lately) and over 700 reviews at www.HistoricalNovels.info

That line really isn't terrible. One of the other lines quoted from the book, though, is rather icky - but then it was undoubtedly meant to be icky. (Also, DA got it wrong; the author is male.)

I take exception to the idea that anteaters are the lovliest of the nocturnal animals. ;)

And the runners-up were?

If "any publicity is good publicity" why do we reward BAD writing?!!!

With writing as with singing, sometimes it takes talent to be truly horrible.
