Max Ginsburg Cover Illustrations

Post by Misfit » Wed November 3rd, 2010, 9:02 pm

I know this was mentioned at the BOTM thread but some of you might have missed it so I'll repost here. These are very cool and lovely seeing the artwork he did first to get the cover. http://www.ginsburgillustration.com/index.html

I didn't have a chance to look at all of them, but the ones I did peek at are very, very nice. The Zemindar cover makes it look like a bodice ripper-type book :p --which is most definitely is not! Also, the way he painted the scenery is much more lush and beautiful than I pictured it in my mind. Actually, when I was reading the book, about the horribly oppressive heat, the monsoons, the violence, I was thinking, why would anybody want to live there, much less love it?! However, if India (or that part of India, anyway) looks anything like he's depicted it, then that explains why! It looks like a paradise!

Lovely work, for the most part. Zemindar caught my eye too.

Don't like his "Little House" paintings. Someone please tell the man that a "star" on a horse's head is not a star of the five pointed variety.

That would go right over my head unfortunately ;)

I agree, The Zemindar is one of my favorites there along with The Shadow of the Moon.

Hee hee, I see what you mean! It does look funny....

Although his paintings are nice, I don't particularly care for the Little House ones, either, because they just don't look "Little House" to me. I associate those books with the drawings that were on the covers I read as a kid. Don't know who the artist was, but it was the same person who did the Charlotte's Web cover.

Interest in HF: started in childhood with the classics, which, IMHO are HF even if they were contemporary when written.
Favourite HF book: Prince of Foxes, by Samuel Shellabarger
Preferred HF: Currently prefer 1600 and earlier, but I'll read anything that keeps me turning the page.
Location: California Bay Area

The Artist was Garth Williams. His illustrations for the Little House series are almost iconic, so there's no need to change them. It's like doing a remake of Van Gogh's Starry Night -- why?

The star on the horse was a little odd, but what got me was the knee-length skirts on the girl. This was the 1870s, even if Laura had grown out of her dresses, before the skirts were that short the waist would have been up to her armpits!

Nice paintings.
