What appears to be a Michelangelo painting has surfaced behind a sofa!

he he This reminds me of an old Far Side comic (I LOVED the Far Side) that showed a woman vacuuming her couch. She had pulled out a cushion and there was her husband. She said, "Oh, so THERE you are!"

Whatever happened to the theory that the Mona Lisa was actually a self-portrait of Leonardo in the guise of a woman? How could that theory (true or not) have gained any traction whatsoever if it was known for certain who the woman in the painting was?

If the newly discovered painting is really a Michelangelo, it seems to me it must be an early one. While it does show a resemblance to Michelangelo's style, it doesn't look that good to me, despite the oohs and ahs of the experts they quoted in the article. IMHO, anything from the Sistine Chapel is much more beautiful. The Mary in his sculpture The Piéta looks quite different, too, though I suppose he could change his mind about how to portray her.

Lost art gods, smile on me! Yesterday in the local Goodwill, my partner and I came across a framed acrylic painting stashed behind a stack of tacky posters that appears to be an authentic Diego Rivera. It bears his signature and date, and looks to be part of a series of Mexican women's heads, swathed in shawls, that he painted in the 1930s. Several of these same paintings are now in private collections.

We're looking now to get it authenticated; most experts charge around $200 to examine it, whether it turns out to be real or not. We may drive to LA to the Diego Rivera Museum to see if we can get it looked at, too. For the moment, we've stored it in a secure place.
