You guys are superstars, thanks for all these great recommends. As I say, I've not read any of these bar the one, so I can foresee and amazon spend-fest coming up!

Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Firebrand is kind of fantasy about the Trojan War.

I've not read these but how about some Roberta Gellis such as Bull God on the Minotaur/Crete, or some Poul Anderson, such as the King of Ys series starting with Roma Mater?
