Do you prefer real or imagined characters?

For discussions of historical fiction. Threads that do not relate to historical fiction should be started in the Chat forum or elsewhere on the forum, depending on the topic.

I prefer to have the main characters be fictional and the secondary characters historical. Like Donroc says, that way there is more room to develop the story and not have to worry about tarnishing or misrepresenting an historical person's reputation. With a fictional characters operating in a framework peopled by historical figures, I can satisfy both my own taste for an imagined plot and publishers' desire for "marquee names."
