Do you prefer real or imagined characters?

I prefer to have the main characters be fictional and the secondary characters historical. Like Donroc says, that way there is more room to develop the story and not have to worry about tarnishing or misrepresenting an historical person's reputation. With a fictional characters operating in a framework peopled by historical figures, I can satisfy both my own taste for an imagined plot and publishers' desire for "marquee names."
