I loved this book! My mum passed it on to me (I regularly wander over to her flat and steal her books! shhh!) and I'm so glad that she did.
Not being a fan of Terry Pratchett, I can't comment on any Death character parallels, but I did think that the unique viewpoint he brought was beautiful. Like LoisAnn, I was particularly touched by the lightness of Papa's soul comment. Beautiful, just beautiful image.
I had to study WWII for GCSE History - how I wish this book had been published then and was on the National Curriculum!
