It's a long time since i read "Forever Amber", but I seem to recall a real bodice-ripper, with Amber a sort of seventeenth century Scarlett O'Hara/Becky Sharp cross :)

Btw, I didn't intend to nominate Sarah Woodhouse's "Daughter of the Sea", though it's certainly worth reading, seeing that I'd already had my go with a nomination for 'The Master of Verona". I just mentioned it in relation to "The Rose of Sebastapol" and the Crimean War.
Here's a bit more info about the book if anyone's interested.

Amber was a busy busy girl in and out of bed, but it's all left to the reader's imagination. Although quite the shocker when first published in the 40's (banned in Boston it was) it's quite tame by today's comparison. I liked it, Amber's one of those heroine you love to hate, and I just loved her just desserts in the end :D :) :p

Interest in HF: I can't answer this in 100 characters. Sorry.
Favourite HF book: Checkmate, the final novel in the Lymond series
Preferred HF: Literary novels. Late medieval and Renaissance.

And now that The Master of Verona is pulling ahead, I'm quite curious to read that one, too. Any author with a name like Blixt has got an advantage - you only have to see his name once for it to stick in your mind!
Browse over 5000 historical novel listings (probably well over 5000 by now, but I haven't re-counted lately) and over 700 reviews at www.HistoricalNovels.info

An old girl-friend of mine said it sounds like a cat sneeze. "Blixt! Blixt!"

It's actually Swedish for Lightning, or Flash. Hence the famous Swedish comic book character, Blixt Gordon.

I kid you not.

Funny, I remember it as the original bodice-ripper! :p Mind you, I was about 13 when I read it, so probably remember it as a lot more steamy than it actually was...

Although I wasn't a huge fan of it, much of the story has stuck in my head especially the vivid plague scenes...but again, memory may have embellished reality :D

That's one good memory, the plague scenes were very good IMO.

This is getting exciting- now "Master of Verona" and "Amber" are neck-and-neck! What happens if we have a tie?
