John Mortimer--dead at age 85.
I never read any of his Rumpole books, but I enjoyed Paradise Postponed and the sequels. He's also one of the few celebrities I've encountered--he was in a bookstore in NYC and another customer recognized him and told him how much he liked his books. I didn't recognize him until then--not that I would have probably had the nerve to say hi anyway!
