Bonne chance!

I just mentioned Ghent in my WIP, believe it or not--François I refused to help the city when the citizens revolted against Charles V's taxes in 1539.

François was in the middle of a tenuous peace with Charles Quint and didn't want to upset that by coming to the aid of Ghent, so he turned down their request for aid. The peace eventually crumbled anyway, but it would have happened sooner if he had sent troops to support the city.
